Presence… 2010

Born alone, dying alone—each of us is a singular being.

Blood flows, memories are etched.

Though our lives and histories differ,

why do we all find beauty in the same moon, the same flowers?

Why do we grieve death and cherish life?

I sense there is something—

an unseen thread connecting us,

a silent resonance shared between us.

Though invisible, I believe it is there.

Presence.

Something close,

something flowing in our blood,

something resting deep within the earth.

Why do I seek to give form to the formless?

Perhaps it is simply a wish—

to connect, to resonate with something, someone, through my work.

A kind of prayer.

An image emerges, shaped by line, color, texture, air, and sound.

Forms change with time and space.

Filtered through myself: fragments of nature, pieces of machines,

things with a purpose, things without.

Metal holds many faces—

a natural mineral, an industrial product, currency.

Like humans, it bears memories and histories,

and in time, returns to the earth.

In front of the material, my own emotions seem to dissolve.

What remains is a quiet act:

a dialogue with the material,

seeking the place where we both come to rest.
